  • Abstract:  With the growth of the Internet as a whole, and the popularity of the World-Wide Web information system in particular, Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) have become the de facto standard for naming on-line resources. The usage of URLs on a large scale has highlighted their deficiences, and new technologies are being developed which attempt to address these - notably the Uniform Resource Name (URN) and Uniform Resource Characteristic (URC). This report outlines some of the problems with URLs, provides an introduction to URNs and URCs, and identifies areas where the approach adopted for the Simple Discovery Protocol may be a viable solution. 1 Preamble It is assumed that the reader is already familiar with the Internet, Uniform Resource Locators[1], and the World-Wide Web. There are now a large number of elementary texts which introduce these concepts, for example[2]. This report discusses problems arising from the current usage of URLs on the Internet, and introduces some possible so...

Peristaltic transport of a couple stress fluid in a uniform and non-uniform channels.

  • The problem of peristaltic transport of a couple stress fluid in uniform and non-uniform two-dimensional channels has been investigated under zero Reynolds number with long wavelength approximation. Blood is represented by a couple stress fluid (a fluid which its particles size are taken into account, a special case of a non-Newtonian fluid). It is found that the pressure rise decreases as the couple stress fluid parameter gamma increases (i.e., small size fluid particle). So the pressure rise for a couple stress fluid (as a blood model) is gre...

  • Stress-strain relationships in various directions were determined on isolated rabbit and cat lungs both during unrestrained and restrained expansion, the latter approximating the condition of cylindrical deformation. Under this condition the distortion due to the weight supported at the lung surface was also studied. Experimental data did not fit the equilibrium equations for a continuum solid, except for relatively small distortions of lung parenchyma. On the contrary, over the full range of lung distortions they fitted a model made up by a th...

The worth of the uniform [uniform crossover]
  • The worth of the uniform [uniform crossover]

  • Abstract Since its popularization by Syswerda (1989), uniform crossover (UC) has become perhaps the most widely used crossover operator, despite the fact that arguments backing low-disruption operators are as old as the genetic algorithm (GA) itself. We question the usual arguments given in favor of UC, and argue that on problems with even a mild degree of difficulty, disruption is indeed harmful. We conduct experiments on a function which is a simple concatenation of several copies of a non-separable function, which makes it difficult for a s...

Image coding with uniform and piecewise-uniform vector quantizers.
  • Image coding with uniform and piecewise-uniform vector quantizers.

  • New lattice vector quantizer design procedures for nonuniform sources that yield excellent performance while retaining the structure required for fast quantization are described. Analytical methods for truncating and scaling lattices to be used in vector quantization are given, and an analytical technique for piecewise-linear multidimensional companding is presented. The uniform and piecewise-uniform lattice vector quantizers are then used to quantize the discrete cosine transform coefficients of images, and their objective and subjective perfo...

Detection of changes in spectral shape: uniform vs. non-uniform background spectra.

  • In most of the previous studies [(1987) Profile Analysis: Auditory Intensity Discrimination, Oxford Univ. Press] concerning the detection of a change in spectral shape, or 'profile analysis', the listener's task was to detect an increment to a single component of an otherwise equal-amplitude, multi-component background. We wished to determine whether listeners would exhibit sensitivity to changes in spectral shape if the spectrum of the background were not flat. The results of two experiments, like those of Green and Kidd [(1983) J. Acoust. Soc...

  • Abstract Residual-excited base-band vocoders (RELP-vocoders) are known to be one of the better alternatives for speech vocoding in the range 4.8 to 9.6 kbit/s. This paper proposes non-uniform decimation as one candidate for improving the quality of RELP vocoders. Both fixed and adaptive schemes for the time-varying decimation are discussed. It is shown that an adaptive decimation allows for coding the full band residual if desired. In fact the decimation can be used to adaptively allocate bits in accordance with the instantaneous spectrum. The...

Uniform and non-uniform V-shaped arrays for 2-D DOA estimation
  • Uniform and non-uniform V-shaped arrays for 2-D DOA estimation

  • Abstract In this study, a new method for optimum design of uniform and non-uniform V-shaped arrays is presented for azimuth and elevation angle estimation. The proposed design method finds an optimum angle between the linear sub-arrays of the V-array by using the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) where statistical coupling effect between azimuth and elevation angle estimation is considered. This method can be used to obtain directional and isotropic angle performances for uniform and non-uniform V-arrays. For non-uniform isotropic V-array symmetric and n...

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the validity of the ICRP procedure of using average tissue/organ dose in estimating carcinogenic risk. It has been suggested that highly non-uniform exposure ('hot spots') is much more carcinogenic than an equivalent dose delivered uniformly. In a series of experiments, mice were irradiated with X-rays either uniformly to the thorax or non-uniformly with 72 1-mm microbeams which irradiated approximately 20 per cent of the total lung volume. Two experiments involving uniform irradiation showed a peaked tu...

  • On Aug. 7, 1985, the Uniform Health Care Information Act was approved by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. This Act and its development were first described in the Feb. 1984 JAMRA. The language approved at the Aug. 7 meeting appears below. Explanatory comments are still being drafted at press time, but will accompany the Act when it is distributed to state legislatures. A resolution supporting the Act was approved at the 1985 House Of Delegates.

Molecular and crystal deformation of cellulose: uniform strain or uniform stress?
  • Molecular and crystal deformation of cellulose: uniform strain or uniform stress...

  • The molecular and crystal deformations of a range of lyocell cellulose fibres, produced using different drawing conditions, are reported. The fibres are spun using increasing draw ratios to both increase the molecular and crystal orientation and, consequently, mechanical stiffness. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction are used to follow molecular and crystal deformation, respectively. It is shown that these techniques are complementary, and that both must be used for semicrystalline cellulose fibres if a full picture of their micromechanics...
