  • Abstract:  Five different strains of mice were investigated for their suitability to serve as models for the study of long-term effects of propoxyphene napsylate (PN) on narcotic-dependent mice. The NIH/Swiss outbred strain proved to be most suitable because of its high liability to manifest physical dependence on morphine. Following removal of subcutaneously-impla nted morphine pellets from the mice, the incidence of spontaneous withdrawal jumping was used as a quantifiable criterion of physical dependence. An orally administered suspension of PN suppressed the withdrawal jumping in a dose-dependent manner. However, chronic (daily) administration of PN at doses high enough to prevent withdrawal jumping was characterized by a high degree of toxicity.

  • For the purpose of conducting a therapeutic study on biofilm of the urinary tract, we devised a computer-controlled severely complicated bladder model (biofilm model of the urinary tract) enabling us to simulate the time-course of the concentration of antimicrobial agents in the urine. Using this model, we investigated clarithromycin (CAM), which has been reported to have anti-biofilm action, at concentrations close to its urinary levels at the time of clinical use in order to predict its effect on biofilm of the urinary tract. On the basis of ...

  • In this study, we established a delayed healing chronic type wound model in order to investigate the etiology of chronic wound healing, including wound contraction. Establishment of the model was important for clarification of the mechanism(s) of chronic wound healing and wound contraction and for use in evaluating therapeutic efficacy. A pedicled skin flap was raised beneath the panniculus carnosus membrane on the backs of mice, and after the loose connective tissue at the base of the flap was completely removed surgically, the flap was replac...

  • Radionuclides in fruit systems: model-model intercomparison study.

  • Modeling is widely used to predict radionuclide distribution following accidental radionuclide releases. Modeling is crucial in emergency response planning and risk communication, and understanding model uncertainty is important not only in conducting analysis consistent with current regulatory guidance, but also in gaining stakeholder and decision-maker trust in the process and confidence in the results. However, while methods for dealing with parameter uncertainty are fairly well developed, an adequate representation of uncertainties associat...

  • BACKGROUND: Mixing between sexual activity classes is an important determinant of sexually transmitted disease transmission. However, attempts to estimate sexual mixing patterns in the field remain limited partly because of practical and methodological difficulties. GOAL: To evaluate and identify appropriate sampling schemes to estimate the mixing pattern between sexual activity classes from large population networks with one or more components. STUDY DESIGN: The study is based on simulations of large population networks with various structural...

  • Drosophila: a "model" model system to study neurodegeneration.

  • The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is a powerful model genetic organism that has been used since the turn of the previous century in the study of complex biological problems. In the last decade, numerous researchers have focused their attention on understanding neurodegenerative diseases by utilizing this model system. Numerous Drosophila mutants have been isolated that profoundly affect neural viability and integrity of the nervous system with age. Additionally, many transgenic strains have been developed as models of human disease condit...

  • The magnetic Eden model (MEM) [N. Vandewalle and M. Ausloos, Phys. Rev. E 50, R635 (1994)] with ferromagnetic interactions between nearest-neighbor spins is studied in (d+1)-dimensional rectangular geometries for d=1,2. In the MEM, magnetic clusters are grown by adding spins at the boundaries of the clusters. The orientation of the added spins depends on both the energetic interaction with already deposited spins and the temperature, through a Boltzmann factor. A numerical Monte Carlo investigation of the MEM has been performed and the results ...

  • Atmospheric analysis and prediction models of varying (grid) resolution were developed. The models were tested using real observational data for the purpose of assessing the impact of grid resolution on short range numerical weather prediction. The work statement was amended to include the performance of sensitivity tests using a coarse mesh (63 x 63 x 5 level) prediction model in order to identify and order factors which might mask or impair the utility of SEASAT data on short range weather prediction. Such factors included: initial conditions...

  • We present an experimental model for a semicircular canal with canalithiasis. Canalithiasis is a pathological condition where free-floating particles disturb the flow field in the semicircular canals. It may lead to a specific form of vertigo known as BPPV or top-shelf vertigo. A careful scaling of the physical and geometrical parameters allows us to study the mechanics of this disease on an enlarged model of a single semicircular canal with laser vibrometry and video particle tracking. Early results confirm the proper operation of the model ca...

  • We fashioned a model for the study of interactions of human blood cells with human vascular wall components. It consists of a segment of human umbilical cord vein formed into a closed loop. The lumen of the vein is filled with anticoagulated platelet-rich plasma propelled through the loop by a peristaltic pump. The results of the present study demonstrated that various degrees of mechanical injury to umbilical vein intimal components result in adhesion and aggregation of platelets. Platelet adhesion can be measured by use of radioisotope-labele...
