In 1985 he starred in his 1st movie, Father and Son, directed by Wang Bingling. Following transferring to Beijing Military Drama Team, then the China National Drama Team, Liu starred in Times With out Leifeng, directed by Lei Xianhe. For his performance, he was awarded the Golden Rooster for Very best Actor (China's edition of the Academy Award). He was also awarded Best Overall performance in a Male Foremost Function in the Excellent Film Awards organized by the Chinese Ministry of Radio, Movie and Tv.
